Gloves & Mitts - Dachstein Mitts

These are the classic heavy duty, pre shrunk wool mitts for serious mountain warmth. Made well oversized and then boiled to shrink to a thick feltlike mitt, they are a definite must for the tough Scottish winters.

Dachstein Mitts are not waterproof, however they do retain some of the natural oils from the wool and are naturally water resistant. Dachstiens have been popular with mountaineers for decades for their legendary ability to keep your hands warm whatever the weather.
When used in winter conditions, ice will form over the mitt which actually helps to keep the hands warm.

As modelled by Clint Eastwood in the classic 1975 film, the Eiger Sanction.

*Please note that the sizing of the Dachstein Mitts is very large, so you may need to order a size, or even two sizes down, from your regular glove size

Buyers Guide - How to choose gloves and mittens

Your extremities are VERY delicate so keeping them warm is and protected from the elements is very important. When you are cold, your body protects itself by pulling blood away from your extremities to your core (body and head/brain) for protection. This makes for cold hands and a lack of dexterity which is at best frustrating when it comes to clipping rucksack buckles but if you are in colder temperatures then things can turn very serious.

Just as with technical clothing and socks – the amount of science and design that goes into a technical glove is astonishing. We pride ourselves on having one of the broadest glove choices available in the country – why? Because when it comes to keeping your hands toasty – fit is king. If you thought clothing was difficult to size then take a look at your hands. Then, look at the hands of your friends………

- What size should I buy?
- When do I need more than one pair?
- Will waterproof gloves keep my hands dry?
- Why are technical gloves so bulky?
- What can I do if I suffer from cold hands/ bad circulation/ Raynauds Syndrome?
- Why won’t my phone or GPS work while I am wearing gloves?
- Mittens or Fingers?
- What about sustainability?

Top tips to make the right choice:

Try them on!

Make sure you can both remove and put the gloves on your opposite hand while wearing them and check to see if they fit under or over your jacket cuffs. Don’t forget to think about layers if you are going somewhere cold or suffer from bad circulation and make sure each layer fits to allow for insulation to loft without feeling tight or crushed.

Don’t forget to check you have brought the right size for your hands and fingers. The best way to do this is…..try them on.

These mitts are fantastic - so comfortable and warm. They are very well made and the fit is perfect. Remember to go a size down from your normal glove size.

My wifes hands have never been warmer. Purchased these on a recommendation before a winter trip to Greenland, and these kept her hands toasty in -50 on the Greenlandic ice sheet - a solid recommendation for warm hands, and stylish hands as well!

Good quality warm mitts. They are large so be careful buying. The xxs equates to a British size 7 (not indicated on any size guide)

These are simply the best winter gloves around, in my opinion. I wore the last pair for 30 years and didnt hesitate to get another pair when they went walkabout Great service from The Climbers Shop. Highly recommended.

I read the guidance on them being large in the size but clearly didnt infer just how large. Theyre unmanageably huge; Ive given them away. Would recommend including equivalent sizing in the guidance.

Really warm mittens. Thick and cosy. No more white finger tips!

Great mittens at a fair price. I purchased the small and I wear a medium in other brands and they fit fine.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Robert Lamoon, on 05/01/2022

These are the mitts that beat all others. Will last a lifetime but sadly the moths got at my old ones. Had had them for getting on fifty years.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Liam Mackinnon, on 13/12/2021

These are the warmest hand wear for winter hill walking and beat modern synthetic offerings hands down, no pun intended. They last for years. Just be aware that they are very generous in sizing and this recent pair were a present that had to be bought two sizes down from normal. A pair of liner gloves adds versatility for when you need to adjust kit and have to take the mitten off.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by N Thompson, on 28/03/2021

Great, really warm, stay warm when wet and also stick to the rock when its cold enough so you can climb easy things in them! Good alternative to my Buffalo mitts. And they look old-skool ;-)
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Caroline, on 11/05/2020

Old school but excellent! My dad told me about these and he used to have a pair back in the day. He loved them and said they were excellent. I got him a pair a couple of year ago and decided to get myself them too. If you struggle with cold hand on winter climbs - these are what you need! Better than Goretex!
  • Dachstein Mitts review by C Emeny, on 29/12/2019

I got the small size even though my hands are quite large, fit perfectly and keep the wind and rain away. Highly recommend the mittens.

These are the best for cold and snow. Warm, cosy, tough. Just not the best thing to try and use your iPhone while wearing. But who cares about that!

These were always the best and never fail. I wear them over thin gloves so always order a bigger size. I hope they never disappear

The mitts are warm and flexible enough I can easily use the controller on my motorised wheelchair. My hands are large for a woman so I ordered a size M. Too small. The L is perfect, if a tad long. Overall, Im delighted with them.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Nigel jackson, on 26/04/2018

Fantastic mitts; the blurb says it all. No other mitts match or exceed these for their combination of function, price and aesthetic value.

When I first heard of these thought they looked a bit old school, however sometimes old school is the best! Really happy with them and a great price.

I have been using Dachsteins for over 40 years and they are still the best mitt for the winter!
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Angela, on 21/12/2017

I bought these to replace a well loved pair bought in Austria many years ago. For someone who suffers with cold hands, they are ideal in cold and damp weather and if using walking poles. If very cold, I wear thin merino gloves underneath. Roasty, toasty hands.

These are to be used on the Everest Base Camp trek soon. I did have a pair about thirty years ago, and I seem to remember even when wet they kept your hands warm, and are good in snow.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Chris, on 18/01/2017

I always suffer from cold fingers and generally putting gloves on makes my fingers feel colder. Then theres these!! Wow, they keep my hands hot, not just warm. Im using them with extremities gortex shell mitts. Seems to me to be the perfect combination. Id been considering some of the seriously expensive mitts on the market so when I got these for well under £30 I was suitably impressed. Very happy with my purchase and the service was swift and seamless. What more could you ask for!

Took these out for their first outing in Snowdon. At -2C and 50mph winds, giving a wind chill of -17C, they were fairly warm. I wore no liner and the tips of my fingers were only slightly chilly. To make these the best combination i was recommended to get some thin liners and a waterproof shell. One great point is the surprising dexterity. While scrambling it was easy to cling onto rocks, and haul myself up. However opening and closing zips was a challenge.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by David, on 03/02/2016

Top notch. NB My hand is normally on the large side of medium but for Dachsteins I have plenty of room in the small size.

Not modern and hi-tec but still one of the best winter mitts available. Warm and virtually windproof - completely so when covered in frozen snow - they also provide excellent grip on snowy/icy rock. Now on my fifth pair.

Arrived promptly, well made and heavy duty. Just need some cold weather to try them out before I can pass a proper verdict.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by M Halloway, on 19/02/2015

I havent experienced the conditions to properly assess the performance of these, and may not now until next winter, but on the face of things quite happy with my purchase. I initially bought large (normally go x large) and ended up dropping down to a medium . My advice would be that unless someone need mitts immediately to hold back until one can try a pair on as their fit is quite different.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Peter , on 12/01/2015

    5
Not put them through their paces as yet, though the quality can be seen from the start, would recommend trying them on size wise in store if possible ? , i bought size small and they are a nice fit, if you are not sure buy size below they are in my mind a size bigger than the chart table.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Julian, on 22/12/2014

Excellent product. Beware the sizing when ordering though. These come up tight around the wrist and length of fingers suffers as a result of sizing up
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Sam, on 17/12/2014

    5
Superbly warm, even when a little damp. I almost look forward to the cold days so I can wear them! If they were good enough for Chris Bonnington on the South Face of Annapurna, then theyre more excellent for my use (hill and low mountain walking/scrambling). Sizing can be a problem though.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by john, on 26/03/2013

Not only do they live up to all the claims made, mine are now over 30 years old and still performing as promised!
  • Dachstein Mitts review by John, on 03/05/2011

I use them for cycling as well as walking as they are the only gloves that keep my hands warm when wet.

As someone who suffers badly from cold fingers these are my miracle cure for winter. Using them with a pair of thin gloves keeps my fingers toasty in wet & windy conditions

the best gloves ive ever had. in freezing temperatures they are warm and dry without inners. they allow your skin to breath, hand have the just out of bed dry warmth!
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Rebecca Sowden, on 17/02/2010

These cant be beaten when worn over a thinner, waterproof and windproof pair of gloves. Then the layer of ice really does form on them and work...old ideas are still the best.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Iain Pearson, on 11/02/2010

These are not the most fashionable mitts but for functionality, they are brilliant. Ive recently come back from a mountaineering weekend in Scotland and used these mitts on a couple of occasions when the weather took a turn for the worse. They were great whilst climbing as ice/snow would form on the gloves and help keep them insulated. I used them with a thin pair of liner golves and they worked perfectly. These are great back up gloves for when the temperature drops and cannot be faulted for great value.
  • Dachstein Mitts review by Leigh Lawrance, on 17/01/2010

I suffer from a mild form of Raynauds syndrome and if my fingers get cold they become very painful and take ages to rewarm. On a skiing holiday last week I wore the mitts ,with thin undergloves, on a day that was cold with snow falling.Even though the mitts had snow on them they kept my hands warm and painfree. Good value for money.
