Dachstein Gloves

Gloves and Mitts - Dachstein Gloves

The Huber Dachstein gloves are the logical progression from the hugely popular Dachstein Mitts. Made from heavy duty, pre-shrunk wool, they form a felt like insulating barrier between your hand and the winter environment - ideal for tough Scottish winters.

Although not actually waterproof, they do retain some of the natural sheeps wool oils that make them highly water resistant - especially for snow. When used in serious winter conditions, the ice will actually form another barrier that helps to keep your hand insulated.

*Please note that the sizing of the Dachstein Gloves is very large, so you may need to order a size, or even two sizes down, from your regular glove size

Buyers Guide - How to choose gloves and mittens

Your extremities are VERY delicate so keeping them warm is and protected from the elements is very important. When you are cold, your body protects itself by pulling blood away from your extremities to your core (body and head/brain) for protection. This makes for cold hands and a lack of dexterity which is at best frustrating when it comes to clipping rucksack buckles but if you are in colder temperatures then things can turn very serious.

Just as with technical clothing and socks – the amount of science and design that goes into a technical glove is astonishing. We pride ourselves on having one of the broadest glove choices available in the country – why? Because when it comes to keeping your hands toasty – fit is king. If you thought clothing was difficult to size then take a look at your hands. Then, look at the hands of your friends………

- What size should I buy?
- When do I need more than one pair?
- Will waterproof gloves keep my hands dry?
- Why are technical gloves so bulky?
- What can I do if I suffer from cold hands/ bad circulation/ Raynauds Syndrome?
- Why won’t my phone or GPS work while I am wearing gloves?
- Mittens or Fingers?
- What about sustainability?

Top tips to make the right choice:

Try them on!

Make sure you can both remove and put the gloves on your opposite hand while wearing them and check to see if they fit under or over your jacket cuffs. Don’t forget to think about layers if you are going somewhere cold or suffer from bad circulation and make sure each layer fits to allow for insulation to loft without feeling tight or crushed.

Don’t forget to check you have brought the right size for your hands and fingers. The best way to do this is…..try them on.

The extra dexterity these give over the original dachstein mitt makes these my now go-to glove. Being wool they are so breathable so don’t over-heat yet still keep your fingers toasty warm even when wet. My recent trip up into the Scottish highlands was a great test for them - they didn’t let themselves down. 5 stars.

Excellent quality traditional woolen gloves that can be worn as they are or with a liner glove. Very warm. Service and delivery was very good, I measured my hand and asked for advice re glove size, received a reply the following day and the gloves fitted well.

Great gloves. Have owned a few pairs over the years and keep going back to them. Nice and warm. Even in snowy conditions hands remain dry. Not classed as waterproof but never had a problem with them. Very water resistant. I put a silk liner gove in them for added protection. Recommended.

I bought these for my partner after he finally having to admit that he needed a new pair after 8 years of consistently wearing his old pair. They are warm, wash well and are hard wearing. Weve darned them a couple of times, but he wears them for walking and cycling and some manual labour in the winter.

These gloves keep your hands lovely and warm. I needed to go down one size from my normal medium size to a small and they fit very well. Perfect for the cold freezing weather we have had lately, but not tried them in the rain, though they are not waterproof gloves, I suspect they would still keep you warm when wet. Cuffs fit nice and snugly to the wrist as well.

Have had the mitts for years and decided to purchase gloves for the likes of dog walking in the very minus temperatures we are having in the Highlands. Really warm and if needed can fit liner gloves inside with no bother. Finger length is quite long so agree go down a size from normal. Excellent customer service. Goods arrived within 48 hours.

The Climbers Shop accurately describe these gloves. Your hands feel warmth immediately you put them on and while they are not suitable for, (say) when driving a car, (because the wooly aspect slips on the steering wheel) for outdoor walking/hiking or climbing, I can see why they have stood the test of time. The double cuff is a nice touch should you want to extend the wrist area of the glove further up your arm... As recommended on the glove description, order at least one size down, (in my case it was two). While I have given 4 stars, I feel them more 4.5 but the star rating system does not allow this.

If you buy a pair of these, you certainly should order at least one size down to your usual size, (in my case - two). They do appear quite individual in looks, (mottled light grey) and as the cuff is doubled up, I can understand why some climbers/hikers like them, as the cuff can be unfolded further up your arm if required. Your hands feels warm and snug immediately you put them on. I suppose they are considered a bit old fashioned by some, but most things which have been produced for years and have stood the test of time speaks for itself... Not waterproof, but the knit is pretty water resistant and although I have given them 4 stars, 4/5 is, (IMO) more where they are at ... (Not suitable when driving a car though).
